The Artist Carousel is set up and run by ArtForms through Education Leeds. The scheme supports collaboration between art teachers and professional visual artists who have an interest in developing their work in schools.
I was fortunate to be chosen as one of the nine artists for the third Artist Carousel. The artists and teachers to plan and organise a presentation of the artist's work, followed by a workshop for students at the school. The 'carousel' then moves round and each artist moves to another participating school, where they deliver their presentation and workshop to another group of students.
In November, I met with the teacher at my first school - Brigshaw High with a group of 15 year olds (who probably thought I was very very old.) A week later, I carried out my first workshop and introduced the students to altered books. At the shadowing session, I had given them a list of items to collect such as beads, buttons, fabric, interesting paper, magazine cuttings and so on. Some of them brought a book with them to alter and I also provided a supply.
In January I ran my second workshop, with 40 (YES, 40!) Year 8 pupils at Guiseley School. This was an all-day workshop so the students had plenty of time to produce some fantastic work, which indeed they did.
The final Artist Carousel workshop took place in February at Morley Academy with two separate groups. The sessions were only one hour each but the students still managed to create some innovative designs on their books.

My first workshop for the Artist Carousel took place in November 2010 at Brigshaw High School. As the workshop was only scheduled for about three hours (and I managed to be nearly an hour late due to the snow that day) I did a "here's one I made earlier" experiment to see what I could create in that time. The result was my fondue book - featured in the pictures on the left.
My final workshop took place at Morley Academy.
