THERE ARE TOO MANY OF US

I started work on the doll's house ostensibly to use up my various bits and pieces of collected miscellanea. I didn't have a theme in mind, but two 'events' have since directed me towards the undeniable threat of overpopulation.

The first of these was a TV series called Utopia. I found it violent and somewhat far-fetched, but the show did succeed in stressing the dire consequences of having too many people for this planet to sustain.

In spring 2015, Blur - one of my all-time favourite bands (and I'm going back to the early 90s here) released an album (The Magic Whip). One song in particular struck me: There Are Too Many of Us.

The lyrics inspired me to use the doll's house as a theme for overpopulation. I am now working on other projects on the same theme, using the tiny model people to add an incongrous nature to textile and mixed-media experimentation.

There Are Too Many Of Us"

There are too many of us

That’s plain to see

We all believe in praying

For our immortality

We pose this question to our children

That calls them all to stray

And live in tiny houses

Of the same mistakes we make

‘Cause there are too many of us

In tiny houses here and there

Passing out somewhere

But you won’t care

There are too many of us

That’s plain to see

And we all believe in praying

For our immortality

There are too many of us

That’s plain to see

We all believe in praying

For our immortality

We pose this question to our children

That calls them all to stray

And live in tiny houses

Of the same mistakes we make

‘Cause there are too many of us

In tiny houses here and there

Passing out somewhere

But you won’t care

There are too many of us

That’s plain to see

And we all believe in praying

For our immortality

For a moment I was dislocated

By terror on the loop elsewhere

Flashing lights advocate it

On the big screens everywhere

‘Cause there are too many of us

In tiny houses here and there

Just passing out somewhere

But you won’t care

There are too many of us

In tiny houses here and there

All looking through the windows

On everything we share

We pose this question to our children

It leads them out to stray

And live in tiny houses

Of the same mistakes we make

‘Cause there are too many of us

That’s plain to see

All living in tiny houses

Of our immortality

There Are Too Many Of Us
